Exploring Switzerland by train
Switzerland is the country with the most dense railway network in Europe. Almost every village has its own railway station and those few not connected to the railway network can be reached by bus. The highest railway station in Europe is the Swiss station Jungfraujoch (3,475 meters above sea level).
Beautiful railway journeys
The most famous is the Glacier Express linking Zermatt and St. Moritz. The train consisting of panorama railway coaches and a restaurant coach passes 91 tunnels and crosses 291 bridges offering breath-taking views of Swiss Alpine landscape. The whole journey lasts 8 hours and is 300 kilometers long.
The Bernina Express takes you from Chur, the capital of the Canton Grison, via the Bernina Pass (2,253 meters above sea level) to Tirano, Italy. During 8 hours the train crosses the Alps passing incredibly high viaducts and glaciers and brings you to the mild climate of the South.
The William Tell Express, named after our legendary 13th century hero, starts in Lucerne passing along the Lake of four Cantons with its many historic landmarks, then through the 17 kilometer long Gotthard Tunnel to Locarno or Lugano in our sunshine Canton Ticino.
Also departing from Lucerne is the Golden Pass Route taking you along six lakes and over three mountain passes to Montreux at the Lake of Geneva. You will travel in three different trains during this trip due to the different gauges.
